I am much more interested in trading for rare Christian music items than I am in paying medium to high prices for them, and I've been saving most of the rare CDs I've acquired over the last 7 to 10 years for the right time to relaunch this page.  That time has now come.  I have begun listing my sale/trade items on Discogs.com since the start of the year, and all of the item descriptions for sale in my account will also contain a Tier ranking (i.e. T2 = Tier 2, etc.) and a Trade Value dollar figure to be used in conjunction with my want list below.  A link to my sale items in Discogs and my website sale page can be found below.

For most of the remainder of this page, I will be referencing CDs in my description of the trading process since my primary interest is CDs, but I am also interested in trading for rare cassettes and LPs, so just treat the term "CD" in the next two sections as a generic term for a set of audio music recordings that, with some exceptions, was commercially available to the general public on some common media format (8-Track, cassette, LP or CD) for our enjoyment, entertainment, or inspiration.

The Trading Process
The process of trading with me is simple.  If you have something I want in a good enough condition, and vice versa, then we can trade and leave out the sometimes very high price tags that many sellers try to obtain (extort?) for rare/collectible CDs.  I've never been one to pay much more than $25 for a rare CD, but I have made a few exceptions over the years.  I will require that the CDs I am trading for be sent to me first, and it will be your responsibility to see to it that I do receive them safely in the same condition that they were sent.  If the jewel case is cracked, this is usually not a big deal, but if you send without the case in a bubble envelope and the CD is cracked when I reveive it, that's obviously an issue.  So buy insurance as you feel the need based on the value of what you're sending.  If you are concerned about my trustworthiness, then please see my eBay feedback, which I have been fortunate enough to keep at 100% with no negatives over my entire time on eBay, sometimes having to make some sacrifices to keep it so.  I am very concerned about customer satisfaction on both ends, and will do my best to assure that you are getting an accurate description of everything I have available and that you will be satisfied with my grading of their condition when you receive the item.  But once the trade is made, returns will not be accepted unless the item I've sent you is defective.  And for all of the rare CDs I trade, I will be doing a test play right before I send the item to be sure this is not the case before I send them out.  Once I receive your items and confirm their condition and playability as needed, then I will send out your package on the next mailing day.  All of my trade packages will be sent with insurance or registering.

I do not buy or trade for music club CDs or promotional CDs.  I also will require that I be informed of all cutouts on a CD I'm trading for.  Most of the trade values below are for CDs that are in Excellent condition or better with no cutouts and very few imperfections in the inserts.  If the CDs you want to trade have any tears, rips, sawcuts, jewel case indentations/dimples, etc. on the inserts, then I will need to know about it.  I do reserve the right to reject CDs sent to me that are improperly described, and to require that you pay return shipping (and insurance) to get them back.  We can make even trades for CDs or include some cash as part of the deal.  I have assigned a tier and cash trade value to everything in my want list below, and to the items I have for trade, and the idea is that we both end up with something we feel is a fair value trade.


The Tiered System
In my view, the overall value of a rare CD in the marketplace is dependent on two factors: (a) the rarity of the item - how many copies there are in existence, and (b) how sought-after the album is.  There are many CD titles that were limited edition pressings and have a thousand or less copies in existence.  Other titles were only pressed once on CD when the album was first release and back in the late 80s or early 90s when the CD format was still in its early years, and there may be only a few thousand copies in existence.  Most of the popular CCM artists will have many more copies of their CDs in existence than this.  But the number of copies is not the only factor.  There are many obscure independent artists who may have only a few thousand copies or less of their albums in existence but who wouldn't draw more than a few dollars on eBay because they are so obsure and almost nobody outside of their small fan base has ever heard of them or heard their music at all and knows if it is anything to be sought out.  So what makes a really rare CD that has a (realistically) consistently high value in the used CD marketplace on venues like eBay and Amazon is a title that is both scarce in number and highly sought after by both collectors and non-collectors.  There are some CDs that will never draw bids of less than $50 to $100 on eBay, and sometimes a lot higher.  But the vast majority of supposedly "rare" CDs only have a limited time span (if any) where they will frequently draw high bids on eBay.

My tiers are set up to reflect not just the level of (sought-after) rarity of a CD, but also how badly I want the CD myself.  Tier 1 represents the most rare sought-after items  There are some CDs that won't get as high a tier rating as they might otherwise if I wanted them badly.  These are usually original pressings of CDs that have one or more reissues.  Unless there is something distinctive in the music about an original CD issue of a title that is changed or not included on one or more reissues that are typically easier to obtain, then my desire to obtain it and give it a high tier rating will be less than if there is only one (official) CD pressing I know of, and no reissues.  Also, there are some CDs that I want for my side collection but not my primary collection, and I will typically always value CDs for my primary collection higher than those of my side collection if I think I have a realistic chance of trading for it on the next lower tier.  So...here is a brief description of the tiers I will be using to determine a trade.

Tier 1
(T1)
 This is the rarest category, and reflects CDs that in my experience are very rare and very sought after.  These will typically draw at least $50 to $100 regularly on used CD sites or eBay, and sometimes a lot more.  Most of my Tier 1 CDs are in my collection, and I will rarely have an extra copy for sale/trade unless I'm very lucky and stumble across a used copy in a store or if I have an imperfect copy that used to be in my collection and I was able to replace it with a much better condition copy, in which case I'd list my old (imperfect) copy on Discogs afterward.
Tier 2

 These CDs, in my observation, have inconsistent value on eBay.  They will typically draw bids of at least $20 - $25 before shipping, but can sometimes go for a lot more.  They're still pretty rare, and you'd be unlikely to find most of them in a used CD store nowadays.  I consider most Japanese CDs that are sought after to any degree to be at least Tier 2, especially if it comes complete with obi and loose bookle/insert where applicable.  Some CDs that I would normally count as Tier 1 I may only list as Tier 2 if they're not that high on my priority list.
Tier 3
(T3)
 This is the tier level that a large majority of used out-of-print Christian CDs would probably fall under.  Many of them may seem like they should be quite rare when comparing their total sales numbers to those of the big name secular artists.  However, due to the fact that a significant majority of these albums are not highly sought after, their actual market value, as reflected on sites like eBay, is typically a lot lower than the hype they sometimes get from online sellers trying to talk them up to a higher price category than they should be getting.  Many once rare Christian CDs have been reissued one or more times, and will wind up in this category in my ranking system rather than Tier 2 which is largely reserved for CD albums that have only been issued on CD once in their original pressing.  Ebay sales figures for Tier 3 CDs can easily surpass $20 to impatient bidders who are new to eBay and want to get the first copy they see.  But the vast majority of the time, these CDs will not draw more than $10 to $15 bids on eBay (for good condition copies), and sometimes a lot less.
Tier 4
(T4)
 This is the tier level that I put most new releases in.  When a new album is fresh off the press, it can be difficult to find new or used for less than $8 to $12.  But after 2 to 3 years, used copies start to build up on Amazon or in used CD stores, and the average price for most Christian CDs will drop to the $2 to $5 range on the internet, and even lower elsewhere.  Out-of-print CDs that will get a Tier 4 ranking rather than Tier 3 are the more popular CCM artists who typically have no trouble selling tens of thousands of copies of their albums, but when they go OOP, would never draw much more than $4 to $5 before tax/shipping from smart shoppers who know what they're worth in the online market.
Tier 5
(T5)
 This tier is what a significant majority of used Christian CDs would fall under, even for many of the classic artists.  It's no secret that most Christian CDs do not sell anywhere near what the popular big-name and big-label secular artists do, and even the household name artists frequently heard on Christian radio will only sell as many albums in their entire careers of 5 to 10+ albums as some of the most popular secular artists would sell for 1 or 2 of their average selling albums.  So given the smaller demand for Christian music CDs, there's always plenty of copies available of most releases from the bigger name Christian artists which eventually become easy to get for relatively cheap, and used CD copies will typically fall to bargain bin price ranges within 3 to 5 years after their release.  CDs that can be found on Amazon or eBay selling (or not selling) for little more than $3 to $4 after shipping costs have been included will get a Tier 5 classification.  This category is usually where I'll also put the more obscure artists whose work never draws much interest or higher prices/bids on eBay and Amazon because nobody's heard of them.  And forget about trying to sell any Tier 5 scratched CDs to any but the most uninformed shoppers.  Like I told someone in an email recently, about all scratched up Tier 5 CDs are good for is using as coasters (you can only have so many of those), and for confiscating good condition pieces of their jewel case.

Okay, so the purpose behind the tiered system is hopefully obvious.  Collectors are looking to trade rare CDs for other rare CDs, or bargain bin CDs for other bargain bin CDs, and the latter usually only if larger numbers of discs are involved in the trade (i.e. at least 5 to 10).  But different collectors can have vastly different ideas as to what the monetary worth of their purportedly rare CDs are.  And it's a fact that some CDs are easier to find here in the US than they are overseas, and vice versa.  So this tiered system is set up to reflect the price range (in US dollars) that I have frequently observed these releases to fall within for smart shoppers on the internet.  Where this may not be the case, it alternately reflects the cash price that I'd normally be willing to pay to buy an excellent or better condition copy if you are interested in offering me one.  Sellers who like to value/price most of their average "rare" CDs in the $50 to $100 range will be asked to take my available sale CDs and adjust the trade value to reflect what you would charge for the item in your store to see if we can come up with any viable trades.  The idea is that both sides feel like they got a fair trade and are happy with the final deal.  But if you are expecting me to honor my generally lower pricing base while trading for items in a much higher "sucker search" pricing base that you might be using, then we're probably not going to get anywhere, and you need to move along looking for the next sucker to try to trade a Petra CD for a rare Japanese issue Christian rock CD.

A trade for a Tier 1 item in my sale list must include a trade for a Tier 1 item in my want list.  A trade for a Tier 2 item in my sale list must include a trade for a Tier 2 or Tier 1 item in my want list.  A trade for a Tier 3 item in my sale list will require a trade for a Tier 3, Tier 2 or Tier 1 item in my want list, and so on.  So if you look through my Discogs.com "catalog" and see a Tier 2 CD you'd like to trade for, you need to see if there's a Tier 2 or Tier 1 CD in my want list below that you have which you'd be willing to do either an even swap for if the price ranges I list are relatively close, or a partial swap with either cash or other CDs making up the balance.

Example: I have a CD on my sale page that is listed as a Tier 2 CD with a $22 trade value.  You have a CD in my want list that is rated as a Tier 2 disc with a $17 trade value.  I'll be happy to go through with the trade, but need either a $5 cash payment to complete the trade, or other CD(s) of any tier that have a total trade value of $5 or more.

I generally like trading in the same format - CDs for CDs, CSs for CSs, etc.  But obviously there are some very rare cassettes and LPs that people are willing to pay pretty stupid money for.  So I'll be flexible when we're talking about hyper rare Christian metal demo cassettes and whatnot, or rare Christian rock/metal LPs that were never released on any other format.  In many cases, it may just be a matter of preference on my end.  I may be willing to trade some Tier 2 CDs for certain rare CSs but not for others.  But with the advent of blogging and the free sharing of a lot of super rare Christian rock demo material, as well as the much simpler process of sharing digital files, I will probably be a lot more hesitant to trade CDs for cassettes or LPs unless we're talking about very good condition (perfect or near perfect playback) super rare items.



My Current Want List

This list is still in progress, and will be for a while - I have finished going through all of the Contemporary Christian pop/light rock artists I collect, and this list is fairly comprehensive in what I am looking for in those categories.  However, I haven't really started to (carefully) go through the rock artists I collect yet.  So this list will probably get a lot longer in a month or two whenever I have finished doing that.  And it will probably be a few months after that before all of the blanks on this page are filled in (Tier numbers, trade values, etc.)  I put off the listing of my sale/trade CDs on Discogs until I had finished this first significant update to my want list, but now that it's done, I will be return to the task of attempting to list several CDs in my Discogs account on a daily basis if possible.  So my progress in finishing this want list and filling in the blanks will be slowed because of this.  If you are interested in trading something you see on this page which doesn't have a tier or trade value assigned yet, please let me know, and I will address those items right away in my reply and with an update to this page.  Basically, if you see a release from an artist I collect that is not listed in my official collection, then there's a good chance it will eventually be added to my want list, so feel free to email me if you think you might have something I would be interested in trading for but don't see it on my want list.

General Notes about want list items below:
- All trade values indicated are for excellent condition or better official issue items.  If you have a CDR and are not sure if it's an official issue item, please ask me first.  I can probably let you know if it's a bootleg copy or not.
- I am not interested in trading for music club issued items.  I'm also not interested in trading for promo copies of full length albums unless the album was never issued to the public and promo copies are all that exist.
- Any damage to the inserts or writing/stickers, etc. on the disc label side or inserts needs to be included in the description for any items you're offering me for trade.
- Please be sure that any Japanese CDs you want to offer for trade are official issue copies and not promos.  You need to check both the disc and inserts.  See this page for more info on how to tell a Japanese promo CD
  from an official issue copy.  For you sensitive types, I apologize for the harsh sounding rhetoric in it.  I do desire to update the language to be a bit "gentler", but that's not high on my priority list at the moment.
- Cassette trade values indicated are only for cassettes that play well and don't squeak.  If the felt pad is missing, that's not an issue so long as the cassette will still play without squeaking and doesn't have any major rough
  spots where it got gnarled in a player at one time.  For very rare cassettes, I may still be interested in getting even an imperfect copy, but my offer and possibly the tier level will be less than what I indicate here.
- LPs in general are a low interest format for me.  My highest priority LP trade interests will be titles that are unavailable on other formats (CS, 8T, CD) and don't have a lot of different cassette pressings or several
  reissue LP pressings.  I will not be enthusiastic to trade Tier 1, 2 or 3 level CDs for LPs unless it's a really rare Christian rock/metal LP with good sound quality music that is not available (officially) on other formats.

Bootlegs [am happy to trade for digital files]
By their nature, there is not really such a thing as an "official" or "original issue" bootleg, unless someone has managed to find a way to prepare a silver CD pressing of a bootleg release, which I have seen
and even have a few of in my collection.  For an original copy of one of the few silver CD bootlegs of artists I collection, I might be willing to offer a trade for a Tier 3 or maybe even a Tier 2 CD from my
sale list.  But for the typical CDR live bootleg of varying unpredictable quality, I generally don't want to offer more than a trade for Tier 4 and 5 CDs, but will offer to buy an "unofficial" CDR copy for $5 to $8.

Digital Files
Note about digital file exchanges: I generally only offer to exchange digital files of super rare material that is extremely limited (demos, limited edition pressings of less than a few hundred, radio promos) and that will frequently or always go for stupid money on eBay or Amazon.  Because of my unwillingness to pay what it would probably take to own an original copy, it's highly unlikely I will ever acquire such items through normal channels, so the only option left after that is a digital file exchange or trading CDRs of WAV files, which I am also willing to do under these circumstances only.  I will also occasionally be looking for digital files of a super rare CD or CS that I have managed to get an original copy of but which is defective.  In exchange for digital files/CDR burns of these rare releases, I will offer digital files/CDR burns of similar super rare things that I have either on CD/CS, or that I have downloaded from the internet and which are not available from the original source(s) anymore [though a lot of it is still available].  If I happen to have an LP or CS copy for sale of some rare or semi-rare album that you are seeking and that I have a CD copy in my collection, then, depending on what you are offering me, I may offer to give you my sale copy along with digital files or a CDR from my original CD if that's what it will take to make the trade happen.
